The Night Everything Changed: The Story Behind Next-Level Mindset
I was lying face down on a church lawn in downtown Toronto, drinking from the sprinkler.
Yep. That happened.
Somewhere between 3:00 and 4:00 A.M., sky just starting to lighten, the city wrapped in that thick July humidity that makes the air feel like a wet towel. I'd lost my wallet, my phone, and my coworkers somewhere over the course of the evening. My dignity had checked out a few hours before that.
And as the sprinkler tapped a steady rhythm against my face, one question rose above the hangover, the heat, and the absurdity of it all:
How did I end up here?
Not here as in—why am I gulping lawn water from a place of worship, though that was also a fair question. I meant here as in—what am I doing with my life?
The Spark That Faded (and Eventually Came Back)
At one point, a part of me wondered what had happened to the spark I had as a kid. Because somewhere between childhood curiosity and adult responsibility, I had traded wide-eyed wonder, curiosity, and a sense of endless possibility for “Oh well… what can you do?”
I hadn’t even noticed how willingly I had lowered the bar on myself. Nobody hands you a memo when it happens. You just wake up one day, or one very damp early morning in this case, and realize you've been coasting for years.
I wasn't making thoughtful choices. I was just rolling with whatever showed up and calling it a plan. I wasn't building a life so much as letting one happen to me. Aimlessly drifting with no particular destination in mind.
And that night on the church lawn was the moment I finally saw it. A truth that hit me with all the subtlety of a brick being thrown through a window:
I had been settling for mediocrity (or worse) in every area of my life.
My decisions. My effort. My habits. My health. My relationships. My mindset. All of it part of a collection of things I was mostly ignoring and half‑hoping would magically fix themselves without any real effort on my part.
The Walk Home That Started a Twenty-Year Journey
I picked myself up—drenched, exhausted, thoroughly embarrassed—and started the long walk back to my apartment. And somewhere around the halfway point, soggy and humbled, the questions started coming.
What happened to the part of me who believed life was big? When did I stop expecting more from myself? What could happen if I actually did something about it?
My grandmother, had she been around at the time, would have had a saying for a moment like this. She'd have surveyed the whole scene—sprinkler water, lost wallet, questionable life choices and all—and said something to the effect of, "Perhaps you should consider removing your backside from the chesterfield and jolly well get on with it."
Which, loosely translated from Grandma-ese, means "Get up off your lazy butt and do something with your life." She had a gift for making a swift kick to the rear end sound almost dignified.
So that walk home became step one of a journey that ended up taking the better part of two decades. Rebuilding, rethinking, and occasionally completely starting over on what my life could look like once I stopped settling for barely scraping by.
It wasn't a straight line. It definitely wasn't pretty. But it was real, and it changed mostly everything that came after it.

Why I Wrote This Book
I put it this way in the introduction:
“This book is the end result of nearly twenty years of trying to figure out how to stop ending up, both literally and figuratively, face down on the great lawn of life.”
Next-Level Mindset isn't a highlight reel, and it's definitely not a list of things I nailed on the first attempt. It’s a roadmap built in the trenches—from the messy, unglamorous, deeply human process of trying to become someone I could face in the mirror without shaking my head and looking away.
The 7 Keys in the book are the tools I wish I had back then. The ones I needed. The ones I still use. This book basically exists because I needed it first. You're just getting the benefit of me already having made most of the mistakes.
Why This Story Might Matter For You
You may not have woken up on a church lawn. You may not have lost your wallet, your phone, and your self-respect in one night. If you did, then “Hello kindred spirit… let’s talk!”
But for now, I’ll just assume you haven’t. But you may have had your moments of doubt. Moments when you may have looked back and thought:
How did I get here?
Is this really the best I can do?
When did I stop expecting more from myself?
This book is for that moment.
Because here's the thing I eventually figured out: you don't actually need to hit rock bottom to start over. Lying face down on the front lawn of a house of worship and gulping water from the sprinklers certainly can help move things along, I won't pretend otherwise. But really, all it takes is a decision. A decision to aim higher. To pay attention. To choose better. To build momentum. To reclaim the spark you thought you lost.
